1. He's pooping on a regular basis now, but Napi thinks he's starting to have problems there again. His stools are becoming hard again, which would seem to confirm our theory that this is a by-product of his formula. Incidentally, we've become very reliant on formula, something we initially said we weren't going to do. In fact, while she was pregnant Napi often spoke of the fact that she intended only to breastfeed the 'nut. As they say in the Army, no plan survives first contact. Between breastfeeding problems (latching on, getting enough milk) and convenience, we've discovered that formula has become a necessary evil in the house. Not that feeding kids formula is evil, mind you, but it's not what we had originally planned. Of course we have a more important reason for supplementing with formula - he's not gaining enough weight. At least that was the indication from last week's visit to the pediatrician where we discovered he was approximately 4ozs under weight. A small number, but a problem nonetheless. We have another visit scheduled for Tuesday (his 3-week birthday!) and we'll see then whether his weight-gain is on track.
2. He seemed to sleep a lot better this weekend. Believe he slept roughly in 6 hour stretches over the course of this weekend, but I'll have to confirm with the boss (aka Napi) on that.
3. We took him out to my soccer game on Saturday afternoon and about 5 hours after the game Napi thought he looked very red and might have been burned. That doesn't appear to be the case a day later, but it gave us a scare and now the question is do we risk doing so again. We've received conflicting information on whether he should be out and about or stuck in the house. In the past, we've taken him for brief strolls around our neighborhood after sundown, and our trip to my soccer game this weekend wasn't seen as a problem because it was generally a beautiful day in DC. In fact, this weekend was probably the best we've seen in some time. Not very hot at all, though we did have a constant sun. According to my mom, taking him out of the house isn't a problem in these early weeks, though letting a bunch of people touch him is. We've been careful to avoid going out on hot days or on days when the sun is really strong and this weekend seemed perfectly fine. But then we've had people admonish us for having him out of the house - period. A cashier at Costco asked us why we had him out and why we had him out without a hat. The guidance is all over the place. I'm almost positive he wasn't burned on Saturday, and as of today I can see no signs of a rash or peeling, but to play it safe we may just have to avoid him coming out to the games until he's a little older.
4. Pee. The boy waits until you change him to let loose with a shot of pee. 8 out of 10 times we are prepared, but the two times we aren't surely suck!
5. The boy is a joy! We get frustrated every now and again, but even when he's crying his little head off he's pure bliss. Would do it all over again and then some in a heartbeat!!
