Fighting Back the Yellow

Paid a visit to the doctor today and she didn't even bother with a follow-up bili test. She took one look at Amiri and declared that he definitely looked better! The weigh-in confirmed it. He's now sitting at 7 pounds, 7 ounces. Not only has he regained the 6 ounces he lost three days after his birth, but he's added an ounce! This tracks well with our visual and measured observations that he's eating a lot more. We are having trouble with him latching on to Napi's tatas, so we've scheduled an appointment with a lactation consultant for tomorrow.

The other problem is sleep. Or the lack thereof. Last night the boy pretty much kept us awake from about 1am to 5am. In fact, at 5am when I put him in his basinette for the last time (and with the sun beginning to rise) he had been up for about an hour. We tried islandbaby's suggestion of feeding him a bottle of formula before bedtime and that worked Saturday night. No dice last night. Can someone tell us at what age babies usually figure things out and start sleeping through the night? As frustrating as this is now while we're both not working, I can see this being a major PITA come next week when I go back to work.

We noticed something equally strange and alarming this morning. His left eye was extremely swollen, as though someone had sucker punched him dead in the eye. We couldn't figure out how that had happened until we remembered that he keeps flailing around and often hits himself in the face. Gotta figure out a way to stop him from doing that, because leaving the house looking like a child abuser is not the move!! Oh, one other little update...he lost his umbilical cord tonight - or what was left of it! Napi got through changing him and putting on a new diaper and was just about to walk into the kitchen when she saw the little "plug" sitting on the floor.
