So you'll recall Napi's accident a few weeks ago where she damn near sliced off her finger washing a glass bowl. She drove herself to the hospital and after several hours wait, received 3-5 stitches and was sent on her way. We are insured (thank JAH!) with BC/BS, and today we received our bill from the hospital. We owe nothing as of right now; the hospital currently has a claim filed with BC/BS, but the invoice details the charges being submitted to the insurance company...
X-ray: $204.00
The technician ordered an x-ray on Napi's finger to determine if there were any glass fragments in the wound. They didn't find any...
OR Services: $182.50
Not exactly sure what OR means, but I'm guessing it's Operating Room and probably means the stitches she received - all 5 of them...
Emergency Room: $637.00
Are they out of their god damn minds!? We sat in that place for damn near 5 hours - they must have been charging by the hour!
Pulmonary Func.: $6.50
Your guess is as good as mine - blood pressure check is my guess.
Drugs/Detail Code: $39.10
They gave Napi a local to dull the pain. It didn't work!
Vaccine Admin: $30.25
That's the tetanus shot she received.
Total Patient Services: $1099.35
Now seriously, let's examine this bill and figure out if it makes any damn sense. And further, let's try and wrap our heads around the plight of those who don't have medical insurance. We're talking 3 stitches and two injections folks! If Napi had gone in there with the entire finger cut off, what would that bill look like? $1.5 MIL? I'm tempted to go up there and ask them if they forgot to ship us the complimentary vaseline...
